Low-Mow May at Wadham

Supporting wild plants and insects in our grounds

While we cannot follow no-mow May in all the semi-formal areas in our grounds, we have adopted a 'low-mow' approach where we can. We have four wild grass/bulb areas in College that will be mowed after May. These can be found under the lime trees in Back Quad; by the bamboo areas in the Fellows' Garden; and in the Warden’s and Private Fellows' Gardens. We hope that by limiting use of our electric lawnmowers for the month of May, we will help wildflowers to grow freely and nature to thrive, particularly the bees in hives that have been reintroduced to our grounds recently.

We strive to have a positive impact on the biodiversity of our College site at all times. Throughout the summer, the many semi-wild areas in our borders and plants in bloom help the pollinators that we want to encourage here. We hope that all College members and visitors continue to enjoy our gardens too. See what our gardeners and their team of staff-and-student volunteers have been working on this year.
