Prof Jane Griffiths named Hypatia 'Woman of the Month'

Date Published: 11.03.2024

The award celebrates women in Cornwall and their achievements, past and present.

The Hypatia Trust was formed in 1996 to collect, and make available, published and personal documentation about the achievements of women in every aspect of their lives. Fellow in English at Wadham, Prof Jane Griffiths has been named Hypatia's Woman of the Month for March 2024.

The announcement describes Jane as having "many strings to her bow," continuing:

"She is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Wadham College, where she teaches medieval and early modern literature in English. Her research is primarily on poetry of the 15th and 16th centuries; her first book was on the early Tudor poet John Skelton.

She’s also a poet, having six books published by Bloodaxe, most recently Little Silver (2022). In the past she’s worked as a letterpress printer and lexicographer, and formally trained and worked as a bookbinder for several years. Lately she spends much more time on jewellery-making and painting, and has work in galleries in Oxfordshire and West Penwith. Bringing these things into conversation with each other is her desire."

Wadham congratulates Prof Griffiths on the recognition!

The announcement includes a detailed interview with Prof Griffiths, where she shares about women who have inspired her, what she's reading, how the world can be made a better place for women, and more.
