Engineering Science

MEng Engineering Science

Average intake at Wadham: 8

Engineering Science at Oxford is a mathematically demanding course. During the first two years all students study core Engineering subjects, covering fundamental aspects of Engineering. In their third and fourth years students are offered a diverse choice of subjects and projects, allowing them to pursue their chosen specialisation.

The Course: MEng Engineering Science

Engineering at Wadham

The Wadham Engineering Tutors hold University posts: they are actively engaged in running their own research groups, supervising research assistants and postgraduate students, and working with other universities and outside organisations. Therefore your tutors will not be in College all the time, but will meet you there for tutorials and socially.

Tutorials in College take place twice weekly. Problem sheets are issued in conjunction with the associated lecture and laboratory courses and tutorials are scheduled at times related to lectures in the Department. Your tutors will not be world experts in every topic discussed but will bring their own insights from their specialist subject and their research. We like to work and think with you, starting from the point where you are on familiar ground. This requires an active commitment on your part to prepare well for tutorials and to explain your thoughts clearly.

There is an annual Wadham engineering presentation day, when third and fourth year undergraduates present their project work alongside our graduate research engineers. This informal event is followed by a special Engineering subject dinner to which all the engineers at Wadham are invited.

A Student's Perspective

Imagine a world without engineers: we wouldn't know much about moving electrons, while printed circuit boards with high processing speed wouldn't necessarily have been invented. There are millions of brilliant ideas of applicational science in various areas. Such delicate systems have always fascinated me.

With the warm welcome from the Wadham engineering tutors, I found my way in Oxford. My tutors are friendly and care about us a lot. Preparing well for tutorials helps significantly, and you should keep thinking how you can make the most from the tutorials.

With great thanks to my tutors and my own efforts, I've acquired better learning skills as well as much scientific knowledge. The intense work load during the terms has equipped me with basic knowledge in several engineering systems, together with the fundamental math skills for engineering.

My favourite part of the first year course was the laboratory experience, an essential part of studying engineering. Making a radio and a bridge in lab sessions is extremely fun! When I eventually finished them, the products gazed up at me like a baby in my hand. I believe also that the amazing lab work has helped my understanding of related topics covered in lectures.
