A warm congratulations on being offered a place at the University and at Wadham!

A Welcome from the Warden

Dear Fresher,

I wanted to congratulate you personally on securing your place here at Wadham and at Oxford University. The fact that you have been successful means that tutors in this College and many other people, including your teachers, have recognised your talent, potential and sheer hard work. They believe in your ability to get the most out of studying at Oxford and I hope you will draw great confidence from that. I know that getting a place at Oxford can be very daunting and comes with lots of expectations and pressures – please remember that everyone feels these and there are lots of people here to help you succeed and enjoy your time at Wadham.

Although Wadham is one of the larger colleges in the University, it has always had a reputation for a strong sense of community. It is famously informal, despite its long history and beautiful surroundings, and I hope you will quickly feel at home here. I am sure that you will make lasting friendships. You will also find an amazingly rich variety of activities at Wadham, from music, theatre and sports, through science and arts clubs, to journalism and politics. I encourage you to take full advantage of what is on offer both within the College and across the University.

At the heart of Wadham’s close community is its diversity. We have always strived to include everyone: you will meet fellow students from every background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious belief and, of course, many different nationalities. Respect for difference and for each other is fundamental to life at Wadham.

This mutual respect is rooted in the pursuit of academic excellence, which is ultimately what brings us all here. Over the next few years you will have a unique chance to challenge yourselves with new ideas, to learn from each other and from the world-class academics working at Oxford. That exchange of ideas and the freedom of thought and speech which underpins it, are something we cherish and uphold here.

I am looking forward to meeting you in person when you arrive in the autumn. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the many people at the College who are here to help you begin your undergraduate life.

Congratulations again, and welcome to Wadham.

Please complete each of the six steps outlined below prior to the end of August, and read through the remainder of the sections on this website (and the associated materials in our Documents Library) well in advance of your arrival in Oxford. There is also lots of helpful information for new students available on the relevant pages of the University website.
